WORKSHOP ON DEWORMING

A workshop was conducted by Dr. Suraj Maharaj on 11th October 2023, Wednesday, to apprise the teachers about National Deworming Programme by the Government of India.
The workshop session focussed on the facts how a large number of students remain absent from school due to infection caused by worms which leads to loss of appetite, nausea, abdominal pain, anaemia and weakness. Children living in rural areas are more prone to catch infection because of open defecation and consumption of unwashed fruits and vegetables etc. The infection spreads through eggs and larvae of hook worms, whip worms and round worms which is transmitted into the body through bare feet and uncovered food items. The infection has negative impact on child’s physical and cognitive development. Studies show that absenteeism in schools decreases by 25% with regular deworming. Keeping good hygiene, trimming nails regularly and washing hands play a crucial role in preventing the infection.
